Dry Eyes
Have you experienced scratchy eyes or tearing eyes lately? They both represent dry eye symptoms and even though these seem like different problems. Other symptoms can include intermittent blurred vision, stinging eyes, red eyes and a sensation of heavy eyelids. Dry eyes occur when the quantity or quality of your tears fails to keep the surface of your eyes comfortably lubricated. The decrease in basal tear production, the increased tear evaporation and tear composition changes will all contribute to eye irritation.
One common factor that affects tear quality is a dry and windy environment, like the one found in Manitoba during the winter months. Prolonged screen time, is the other factor that I see daily. When we are on the computer we forget to blink and this causes thinner tears due to increased tear evaporation.
Some common treatments for dry eye can include artificial tears, warm compresses and lifestyle changes depending on the cause of the symptoms. Wearing sunglasses will reduce sunlight and block wind from directly blowing on your dry eyes. Make a medical eye exam appointment with me, if you are experiencing any of the above, and would like a professional opinion. Just call nv eye care eye wear at 204-504- 6863 to make an appointment with me. Since this is usually a medical problem, those with a MB Health card do not pay for this service.
